with members of the victims' families and the governor and local officials so stay with cnn. president obama expected to make some public comments in a few minutes and we will have that for you live of course on cnn. the president is going to speak not long before a citywide gathering of people here in aurora. they will pray, they will honor the people killed, and they will be together. at the scene where the people of aurora are beginning to gather right now. take us there. what is expected to happen where you are later? >> reporter: well, in about 90 minutes, this prayer vigil will begin. we're already beginning to see people gather in this rather large square. if you look behind me, you can see there are chairs set up and people are standing around this area. there is a stage set up. a podium. what we are expecting to hear today is a community trying to come to grips with what has happened. trying to moveeyond the actual shooting and work on becoming a community of healing. we're expecting to hear from the governor, the mayor, as well as victims. victims' families, people

>>> hello again everyone. you're in the cnn newsroom. i'm fredricka whitfield. a significant new development in the mass shooting at a colorado theater. the suspect james holmes was seeing a doctor who specializes in schizophrenia. drew griffin is with cnn's special investigations unit. >> according to his attorney in colorado the 24-year-old accused of killing 12 and gunning down dozens of others was seeing a psychiatrist at the time of the shooting. it's a huge development that stems from that package that was mailed to a professor at the university of colorado's aurora campus on monday. according to a motion filed in colorado, just yesterday, that professor was actually james holmes' psychiatrist, dr. lynn fenton the head of student medical health services at the university of colorado's aurora campus and according to holmes' attorney mr. holmes was a psychiatric patient of dr. fenton and his communications with her are protected. that attorney is now trying to get ahold of that package and the contents of which according to cbs news supposedly describe how holmes would kill p

cnn newsroom, i'm fredricka whitfield. an you a tist ek man is recovering after wandering for more than three weeks in utah's desert. rescuers found the 28-year-old man yesterday starving and dehydrated but alive. he says he survived on frogs, roots, and river water. cnn's nick valencia is here with more on this journey. how did it begin? how did they find him? so many questions. >> it is shocking would he survive something like this. 28-year-old autistic man, lost in the wilderness for three weeks. we know what happened to william la fever. about june 6, june 7, he called his father from boulder, utah. originally from can colorado springs. somehow without a vehicle he gets to boulder, utah. he called his father and said he was robbed of his camping ger and needs money to get to page, arizona to get to his sister. he dezads it take this 15-mile long river hike and he gets lost. by himself. he was with his dog. his dog, trustee companion, took off on him. and he was by himself when the department of highway patrol and highway patrol from utah found him. >> how did they find him? >>

christian bale. >> with more, let's head to aurora and cnn's jim spellman. good morning. >> reporter: carol, it's fascinating how this began. somebody on facebook posted they thought that maybe christian bale should come here. then our affiliate started to hash tag on twitter, bail out aurora. and over 300 million people have used that hash tag to encourage cr christian bale to come here. but people have been so excited on twitter and facebook, and everybody i have spoken to here. as much as the fact he came here as to how he did it. he asked there be no media. all of the photos we have seen are cell phone photos that popped up on facebook. and then he came here to this makeshift memorial across the street from the theater and even joined a prayer circle with people who showed up to pay their respects. they didn't even know that was christian bale. the way he did it in this low-key manner, people are really excited about that. as you heard from the person earlier it was nothing hollywood about it. it seemed genuine. it really made people -- it's really been an important thing here to

details that slowly and slowly are trickling into the cnn newsroom. if you were tuned into the last hour, our pentagon correspondent barbara starr confirming staff sergeant jesse childress of the u.s. air force. if you remember, randi, four servicemen in all shot and wounded early friday morning in the aurora, colorado, movie theater shooting, but we've just confirmed staff sergeant jesse childress of california. he was a member of the air force reserve, active duty. his family telling cnn that they were notified at about 1:00 a.m. this morning of his death. john larimer, petty officer with the u.s. navy, also among the list of deceased that cnn has been able to independently confirm. he's a 27-year-old, was in the u.s. navy for less than a year, and was serving his first post there in colorado. the family notified about his death last night. we spoke to -- i spoke to his father, scott, from crystal lake, illinois. he said "we send our thoughts and prayers out to families of the other victims and those still recovering in the hospital. we love you, john, and we will always miss you.

a funny guy with a big heart. also among the deceased, cnn can confirm micayla medek, 23, also among the dead. we spoke to her aunt, an emotional interview. gary tuchman spoke to her a short time ago. she was said to be an independent girl, great fun. and this is just the saddest part, randi, if you can believe this -- the family waiting 19 hours before they found out about her status, her condition, and that's just the family there saying that just took too long for them to find out. lastly, of course, a name we've been hearing a lot, jessica ghawi, or jessica redfield. her brother, jordan, has been very active on social media, creating that trending hashtag, #ripjessica. she was an aspiring sports broadcaster and somebody who no doubt would have had a great impact on our industry and on our field. she had moved to denver from texas within the last year to pursue that dream of becoming a sports broadcaster. she also had survived a recent shooting in toronto, canada, if you can believe that, randi. she escaped that only to perish in this shooting early friday morning in aurora,

feelings? >> we did. cnn did have a chance to talk to them, and we were, our cameras were rolling yesterday when police allowed, started to allow people to go back in permanently. at first they were allowed to go back there to get some of their belong inings to get to where e they were staying to a hotel or relative, but yesterday they took down the police tape and allow ed them wider access, but the interesting thing, fred, is that some folks are choosing not to go back. they are choosing to go back to get their things, but not comfortable yet. most of the people are choosing not the stay permanently, but a few of them said, i am glad to be back to sleep in my own bed and hopefully things will start to get back to normal soon, but i think that it is interesting because of all of the explosive s that investigators say that were in that apartment, that a lot of people are not comfortable going there to stay there permanently. yes, fred? >> yes, don, and some people still suspect some residual explosives in the unit and it does not make them safe or they don't like the eerie feeling

done. a close source to the jackson family did tell cnn that shortly before 1:00 a.m. this morning katherine jackson arrived home to be reunited with the family. the police didn't follow the family the entire way from arizona. it was just the last part of the trip. katherine was accompanied by her children in the car. i can only wonder what happened when they all arrived to the house. and paris jackson, michael's daughter, welcomed her grandmother back with a tweet reading, grandma's home, with a #thank yougood. paris had been complaining she hadn't been able to talk to her grandmother. katherine tried to reassure everyone in her prepared statement last night that everything was ok. let's watch that. >> there are rumors going around about me that i've been kidnapped and held against my will. i'm here today to let everybody know that i'm fine, and i'm here with my children, and my children would never do a thing like that, hold me against my will. it's very stupid. >> still doesn't explain why katherine apparently left in the first place without letting the kids know where she was g

least we hope. cnn's dr. sanjay gupta joins us now. he arrived in cambodia and he is on the phone with us. so dr. gupta, talk to me about this so-called breakthrough we have been hearing about. what do you think of this disease and breakthrough? >> well, you know, it's been a complete mystery for some time now. this is a significant development. what doctors have discovered is the beginnings of a pattern among these dozens of kids that, you know, there's been -- the numbers vary a little bit, don, but 66 cases of this sort of mystery disease, 64 as you mentioned children have died. nearly 100% lethality. what they have found is something known as virus 71. it's a particular type of virus that can cause something known as hand, foot, and mouth disease. they've seen outbreaks in various parts of the world. oftentimes it can be contained. it certainly doesn't have the same degree of lethality as this. that's where the mystery still remains. why is this killing children so universally? could this potentially be a mixture of this virus with something else? either some toxic reaction to
